Why Home

At Habitat DC-NOVA our mission is a world where everyone has a safe, decent place to live. For far too many people around the world and in our local community, home ownership is inaccessible due to rising costs. In DC & NOVA, the average home price was nearly $600,000 at the end of 2025 (FRED). However, the median income in DC & NOVA is approximately $166,000(HUD), meaning hard-working individuals can still not afford a home. In addition, renting has left many people choosing between housing and other necessities as nearly 1/3 of renters are paying more than 30% of their income in housing.

Habitat DC-NOVA works in the gap by selling homes below market rate, partnering with other non-profits to lower the cost of land, and utilizing volunteers to help lower construction costs. Owning a home is often considered to be one of the main factors of the “American Dream” and the evidence shows the benefits of homeownership. Across the US, quality, affordable housing is a protective factor for reducing psychological distress in individuals. There is a significant correlation between the quality of housing and mental & physical health.

A study done by DC Habitat in 2020 shows the impact of home ownership in our community. For those who purchased a Habitat home, their monthly housing expenses dropped by $2,000, they generated over $40 million in wealth through their income, and their children graduated at 92%, higher than DC’s total graduation rate. Home ownership is truly a foundation to build your future.
